South Africa has long been a beacon of excellence in golf across the African continent, from the iconic figures of Bobby Locke and Gary Player to modern champions like Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel. But golf in the more central and northern parts of the continent has been quietly developing.
In nations like Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and others, a new generation of golfers is slowly but surely emerging as they start their journey on professional tours. However, it’s not just about the stars on tour; it’s about the grassroots, where transformation must take place.
Across the continent, dedicated individuals and organisations are working to foster the sport’s growth, ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to participate. This is particularly poignant given the challenges faced by many Africans with disabilities.
The statistics are stark: 80 million Africans live with disabilities, facing not only physical obstacles but also societal barriers. Access to essential assistive devices is often limited, making everyday life a struggle, let alone pursuing athletic endeavours.
Through initiatives like the G4D Tour, spearheaded by the DPW World Tour and EDGA, possibilities are being showcased. In February 2024, the world witnessed Kenya hosting the G4D Tour at the Magical Kenyan Open.
This event was not just about golf but about breaking barriers, challenging perceptions, and inspiring change. It showed what is possible when individuals unite to champion inclusivity and empowerment.
The journey towards a more inclusive golfing world is ongoing, but with each swing of the club, we inch closer to a future where golf truly knows no boundaries. EDGA will continue to raise awareness, advocate for accessibility, and celebrate the incredible resilience and talent of all those who dare to dream.
